Miners shrank a thousand pictures into letters.

Around 1800 BCE, Hebrew/Canaanite-speaking laborers in the turquoise mines of Serabit el Khadim, Semites sweating under Egyptian masters, did something no priest had dared. 3 · PHOENICIA

Sailors turned the letters into cargo.

By 1050 BCE the Phoenician traders of Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos had sharpened the miners' signs into a crisp kit of twenty-two. It was the first script simple enough for merchants, not just palace scribes: a week to learn, a lifetime to profit. Their ships carried cedar, purple dye, and the alphabet to every port on the Mediterranean, and the letters went ashore with the receipts. The Greeks did not steal the alphabet. They bought it.

4 · TEMPLE

The letters stood in the Temple courts.

The miners' signs straightened into the old Hebrew script. Zayin kept the weapon. Alef kept the ox. Beyt kept the house. Carved in stone, inked on ostraca, the wolf word walked into scripture as ze'ev.

Alpha beta is alef beyt.

The ox is still plowing.

The Greeks got it wrong in all the right ways. They flipped letters to face their new direction, mangled the ancient names into words that mean nothing in Greek and everything in the older tongue, and turned the consonants they could not pronounce into the first true vowels. Early scribes even wrote the way an ox plows a field, turning at the end of every row; the Greeks called it boustrophedon, the ox turning. From their remix came Latin and Cyrillic; from the same Hebrew/Canaanite root came today's Hebrew and Arabic. Nearly every alphabet on earth descends from the miners' twenty-two signs.
